i am excited to report that i am sending work to gallery 50 in traverse city, mi. it should arrive sometime next week. Hooray!!!
i just had a meeting this week with the women of handmade austin women to begin the planning of the may 2009 show. we had a really yummy pot luck dinner with salad, curry soup with rice, green beans, vegan chili, fresh fruit, hummus & crackers, cookies & pumpkin cupcakes. we designated jobs, developed our calendar, and talked about new artists for the upcoming show. the candidates will be chosen by october 15th…….YEAH, i can’t say anything other than it’s going to be the best show yet…..i can’t wait.
i feel truly honored to be part of such an amazing event with so many talented and inspiring women. the may 2009 show will be on may 2 & 3. here are some pictures from last year’s show that i wanted to share with you.

have you ever had that moment where something crazy exciting & euphoric happens. when you feel like 1. everything in the room stops and 2. someone stole your breath away. last night i had this exact experience. chris and i went into book people the most amazing book store here in austin. i was browsing the magazine section to find a few craft/art/jewelry magazines that i could find “call for entry” information. i picked up the ornament: the art of personal adornment magazine and was flipping thru to see the images as i made my way to the back of the magazine. i noticed a few ring images that looked familiar from “the ring show: then and now” and as i flipped one more page there was a picture of my “cake pillow ring”. hot damn, “what the frogs”, i think my heart stopped for a moment. i had know idea. i couldn’t belief my eyes. my piece was right there in the magazine with my name and everything. i ran over to chris to share the excitement. i was so ecstatic i didn’t even bother reading the article………i was too busy having a party in my head. the article says, “and jaime jo fisher won third place with Cake Pillow Ring, an oxidized silver ring that features graduated stacked pillows of bright pink plastic from a rain poncho with green stitching, capitalizing on her interest in using repurposed materials and her experience as a cake decorator.” pick up ornament: volume 31 no. 5 to read the whole article. thanks for listening to me toot my own horn…..toot toot!! happy saturday :O)
here is the magazine….

i love the allison bone ring in the lower right corner below my ring and i also wish i could try on the ring by yael krakowski (upper left corner). i was fortunate enough to actually see yael’s work in person at a charon kranson trunk show that happens here in austin in november. her work is off the charts amazing….but they didn’t have any of her rings there so i am extra curious about this one. plus it’s absolutely my colors :O) i love that it’s opposite my ring in the magazine.

here’s a couple articles written about the ring show i am in at the georgia museum of art in athens. click here and here to read about the show. there is a very sweet story about a man proposing to his girlfriend at the opening of the ring show…….well done fella.

i am excited beyond words to be part of an upcoming international exhibition called metal inclinations. this show is put on by the midwest metalsmith organization. my pink bunny ring box pictured above will be part of this online show that opens on october 31, 2008 and runs til october 31, 2009. over 1150 pieces were submitted and the show includes only 50. a happy girl, indeed :O)

well not quite yet, but i am making work for a few gallery orders. some work will soon be going to 3rd ward in milwaukee, wi and another order to gallery 360 in minneapolis…..both cities i would so like to visit someday in the near future. another round of work will soon be going to yogagroove in austin, tx when the studio finishes their expansion project in the next month or so. actually, all the work will be sent to the gallery’s within the next month or so.

YEAH!!! ann arbor was great and i so enjoyed talking with curious patrons, customers and all my art fair buddies as well as making some new ones. thanks to all of you who dropped by for a visit. i hope to see you all next year
i have a few pics from the show……

my booth

my friend ben playing “99 red balloons” on his brand new (to him) vintage accordion….it made me think of my mom-in-law, pat. she used to play one :O)

some sweet little girl came in my booth and talked with me about visiting her aunt in new york and helping her make jewelry. she had on these great little ice cream shoes and i couldn’t resist snapping this photo (with her mom’s permission). she was carrying around a little cup of pretzels and just talking away. she was too sweet.
on another note, a woman came in my booth later that day with a schnazzy pair of black sandals on and a fabulous pedicure in a color scheme that i used growing up. each toenail was painted a different color….all pale pale opaque easter egg colors: pink, yellow, green, blue, purple. i was so excited when i saw them that i jumped up with my camera and ask the woman if i could snap a photo of them. i could tell by the look on her face that she was afraid of my request and she high-tailed it out of my booth saying “no thank you”. i really didn’t mean any harm. i cracked up!!!

oh, it’s so good to be home…i’ve had a long nap (since i got up at 4:00am to catch my plane home), drank some kombucha, ate an enormous salad with my fave balsamic vinegar dressing and am feeling the comforts of home. it was such an incredible adventure in ann arbor, but i am a happy girl to be back home. i’ll feel even better tomorrow after i go to yoga. i’ve had a week off and my body (AND MIND) are missing it :O)
hope you had a great weekend too.
if your in ann arbor this week swing by my booth and say hi. i am in booth B209. the show runs from wednesday, july 16 - saturday july 19 from 9a - 9p. i’ll be there rain or shine.
heart, jj
