funky petite plushie pins by naughty little pony

my heart skipped a beat when i saw this image. this piece is breathtakingly beautiful & sad…and mesmerizing. i can’t imagine the emotion if i were standing next to this sculpture. i fell in love with it even more when reading the description below by sabrina gschwandtner.
“Then there was Keith W. Bentley’s “Cauda Equina,” a small, shaggy sculpture of a horse. I stared at the little pony for a while, trying to pinpoint what made his presence so endearing yet inaccessible. I realized that the pony’s eyes were covered by hair, a veil that denied me the connection I sought. Wall text revealed that the work was based on Victorian-era funeral etiquette, which required widows to wear black for eighteen months. The piece mourns the death of over two hundred and fifty horses slaughtered in processing plants; the hairs from each horse were hand-knotted onto fabric and then fitted over a taxidermy form. The fact that this sculptural animal was created as a stand-in for others’ deaths gave it an otherworldly presence.”

i scored this beaded necklace at a really cool vintage and oddities shop here in austin, uncommon objects. does anyone know how this beaded necklace was made? crocheted? knitted in the round? is it just a traditional bead stitch? the peyote bead stitch will stack the beads next to each other but i’ve never seen it with thread threads exposed and interwoven like this piece. i would love to learn how to make one with the thread exposed and woven just as this piece is. anyone???

i am in awe with the work of katie niewodoski. the pop of color among the nude, skin-like, color palette and the use of polymer clay and bead materials are made into something resembling systems in an underworld or within the human body. it would be a treat to see these pieces in person.

think this would fit nicely in my cupboard.
plate by lauren gallaspy. see more work here.
she current has a show at akar gallery.

i am floored & inspired by the breast to breast brooch by margaux lange. personally, the timing couldn’t be any more meaningful.
additionally every detail is lovely:
the classic shape
the putty color
the barbie doll breasts
the concept & homage

i am hopeful margaux will make the “strand of pearls” breast necklace as well =)

i love the idea of creating a necklace or ring using teeth or just one tooth from maybe a loved one like your witty and charming five year old, a found animal tooth, or from your special furry friend. i have been making jewelry out of found, random and peculiar things since i started making jewelry about 10 years ago. i don’t think teeth would be to much of a stretch. i have used dryer lint, animal fur, rubber grapes, construction paper, moss, antler, plastic from doll shoes, bouncy balls, melmac, just to name a few. i have some teeth of nemo’s that i have been finding about the house lately which has renewed my inspiration for teeth in jewelry.
any takers for a bizarre and sweetly sentimental piece of jewelry…. any brave and slightly twisted characters out there up for the challenge?? lemme know…..
